Friday 15 November 2024 Reception's Week Reception have done lots of writing this week! From how they would fill their bucket of kindness for Kindness Day, to odd sock designs and orders for the cafe, children have been using their phonics to spell simple words and emotions, e.g. happy, hug.

Thursday 3 October 2024 Reception's Take One Picture This week Reception began their study of A Courtyard of a House in Delft. Drawing on the arches and bricks in the painting, they have been printing with Duplo. Having enjoyed tracing last week, children traced a variety of arches and chose to add their own colours. They also drew what was behind their own imaginary door, with ideas ranging from fairies to Roman soldiers!

Thursday 26 September 2024 Shapes in Reception This week, Reception found 2D and 3D shapes in The Courtyard of a House in Delft, our Take One Picture. Inspired by this, they made shape monsters, categorised shapes and printing with 3D shapes.

Thursday 19 September 2024 All About Us in Reception Children have had a busy week! To support settling in, we read The Colour Monster and talked about different feelings. The different colour monsters visited the classroom and we wrote messages on post-it notes to make them feel better. Children drew self-portraits using mirrors.

Thursday 12 September 2024 Settling into Reception Reception have settled brilliantly into their new classrooms. Our topic for the first 3 weeks is All About Me. We have talked about our families, interests and friends.

Thursday 4 July 2024 The Runaway Pea at Hexham Book Festival Reception enjoyed their visit to listen to The Runaway Pea. They created actions for the story and then made their own plates of peas. It was brilliant seeing how differently they all came out - from party peas with hats, to birthday cakes, peas with sunglasses and more!

Friday 28 June 2024 Minibeasts in the garden Reception are swiftly becoming minibeast experts! This week, they made brilliant leaf books writing facts about caterpillars and butterflies. Did you know caterpillars shed their skin 3 times?

Thursday 20 June 2024 Writing Day in Reception Reception loved National Writing Day! They particularly enjoyed writing positive notes for teachers and siblings and delivering them round school. They played Human Hungry Hippos on scooter boards, collecting letter balls to spell words.

Thursday 6 June 2024 Minibeasts in Reception Reception have enthusiastically begun their half term of work on Minibeasts with the arrival of the caterpillars! They can't wait to see the chrysalis' form and for the caterpillars to transform.

Friday 24 May 2024 Maths in Reception Over the last few weeks, Reception have had a focus on number. Everyone has been busy making teen numbers, adding numbers together and most importantly, choosing how to show their answers. With their increasing knowledge of number bonds, children have begun writing number sentences. They also chose to draw part whole models and used lots of practical tools to show their calculations.

Thursday 16 May 2024 Dance with Natasha Elizabeth Reception have loved 5 weeks of Dance with Natasha Elizabeth. Working on their own, as a group and in partners, children learnt new routines, moved to different pulses and followed multi-step instructions brilliantly. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed a musical Thursday!

Thursday 2 May 2024 All About Hexham This week, Reception talked all about their local area - Hexham! They drew maps of their route to school, including bridges, shops, hills and garden gates. Children described their journey, writing in simple sentences. They compared Hexham landmarks to those in London, including The London Eye and Tower Bridge.

Thursday 18 April 2024 The Earth and 3D Shapes As Reception begin their topic, Maps Maps Maps, they began with the world! Children loved looking at world maps and globes, identifying animals in different continents and noticing land, sea and desert. They created suncatcher globes and wrote post-it notes about things and people they love on Earth.

Tuesday 26 March 2024 Reception's Dinosaurs and Doubles Last week, Reception finished their fortnight on Dinosaurs. They learnt about Mary Anning, the pioneering paleontologist and fossil collector. They compared Mary's everyday life to their own, noiticing similarities and differences between the past and present.

Thursday 14 March 2024 Reception Spring Stay and Play Children enjoyed welcoming grown ups into the classroom for Stay and Play sessions this week. There was lots of drawing and building, and the odd appearance from the chicks too!

Wednesday 6 March 2024 The Chicks! The long awaited chicks have arrived. After 21 days of incubation, the first eggs pipped last night. They are now keeping warm under an incubator.

Monday 5 February 2024 Supertato Needs Rescuing! Early this morning, the office received a postcard from Supertato with an important message for Reception.

Thursday 1 February 2024 Storytelling Week To mark National Storytelling Week, Reception read The Incredible Book Eating Boy. Children made puppets with which to tell their own tales (including tickets to come to the show), wrote about their favourite stories and made lots of lists. They used storytelling dice to tell jumbled up stories, change the endings and make ordinary stories funny.

Friday 26 January 2024 Big Bird Watch Reception took part in the Big Big Watch this week. Using RSPB resources, children learnt about common garden birds; how to identify them and how to encourage more to visit the garden.

Friday 19 January 2024 Ice Experiments and Supertato The Evil Pea appeared in Reception on Monday, having captured Fred Frog and left some mean clues. Everyone has been hard at work writing and plotting ways to capture Evil Pea - including ladders, parachutes, aeroplanes, trampolines and Spiderman powers. The classrooms are covered in messages both to the Evil Pea and Supertato's characters.

Friday 12 January 2024 Magnificent Machines This half term, Reception are learning about Magnificent Machines. Following their own interests, children spent the first week back investigating robots! They programmed Ozobots to follow a marked path along paper and used screwdrivers and wire cutters to dismantle broken technology and see how it works.

Tuesday 19 December 2023 Biscuits and Hot Chocolate around the Firepit To celebrate Winter and the end of term, Reception made biscuits and hot chocolate. Having used sets of old balance scales in the classroom for weeks, they were intrigued by modern scales! They measured butter, sugar and flour and combined it to make dough.

Friday 15 December 2023 Reception's Busy Jobs Just a few of the activities Reception have been busy with this week. Including word hunts for Percy the Park Keeper on a snowy night, habitats for hibernating animals, measuring classroom decorations and using artists' easels.

Thursday 26 October 2023 Reception's Take One Picture Open Day A day full of art and witch's potions in Reception! Children built on their printing skills from this half term to make stamps using textured materials. They made paper animations of boats in stormy seas and created disgusting recipes for Winnie's Pumpkin.

Thursday 12 October 2023 Mono Printing WOW Reception! We loved printing stormy waves for our masterpieces this week. Children loved the simplicity of the process and the big reveal as they uncovered their pattern. These will form the sea in their final Take One Picture piece, adding texture and movement to their art.

Tuesday 3 October 2023 Museum of the Moon Reception had a wonderful lunar trip to the Abbey today to visit the Museum of the Moon. The Abbey staff asked children to share their thoughts about the moon. Some said it was a sphere and that it had craters, whilst others said they loved the moon!

Friday 29 September 2023 Reception Gymnastics This half term, Reception are enjoying Gymnastics lessons with our specialist coach, Gayle Smith. This week they practised bunny hops, leaping over benches, jumping with two feet together, holding balances with upper arm strength and jumping into a squat position.
