Year 3

Meet the Year Three team - Mr Speed, Miss Colman, Mrs Harber, Miss Robson

Year Three (Y3) is the first of four years children spend in Key Stage Two (KS2).

They follow the Y3 or lower KS2 programmes of study from the Primary Curriculum published September 2014.

Children are taught subjects through inspiring specific units of work, for example,  projects such as our whole school Take One Picture (The National Galley) unit at the beginning of the year; STAR WARS during STEM fortnight; the fictional world of Pandora and the Ancient Greeks.

During Year Three, children get the opportunity to be taught by different adults for part of their curriculum. For example, during rotations including music lessons and for Spanish in our Monday rotation of activities. In PE, children may also work with specialist coaches over the course of the year, and will attend swimming at Wentworth Leisure Centre in the summer term.

Children also have access to an exciting range of extra-curricular clubs such as Choir, Football and Dance.

• Friday 26 June 2026 Year 3 Week 4: Sun Safety in Science With the recent warm weather, our Year 3 scientists have been learning all about sun safety in their science lessons. We discovered the 5 S's of Sun Safety to help keep everyone safe when spending time outdoors:
• Friday 19 June 2026 Year 3 Week 3: Water Safety Whizzes This week, our school took part in Water Safety Week, learning how to stay safe in and around water. Children enjoyed a range of exciting activities, including water safety quizzes, class discussions, and creating colourful posters to share important safety messages. We were also delighted to welcome a parent who gave a special talk about water safety, helping pupils understand the risks and how to respond in an emergency. The week was both fun and informative, and everyone learned valuable skills that could help keep themselves and others safe.
• Friday 12 June 2026 Year 3 Week 2: HMS Visit Our Year 3 children recently enjoyed an exciting visit to Hexham Middle School, where they had the opportunity to experience a range of lessons and explore the school environment.
• Friday 5 June 2026 Year 3 Week 1: Sweet Success: Celebrating Eid Through Food and Design This week, our pupils combined their learning in Religious Education and Design Technology by making delicious date energy balls to celebrate Eid.
• Friday 22 May 2026 Year 3 Week 5: Resus Rangers to the Rescue! Pupils recently took part in an exciting and educational “Resus Rangers” session, where they learned important first aid and lifesaving skills in a fun, hands-on environment.
• Friday 15 May 2026 Year 3 Week 4: Mavericks vs Phantoms: A Fantastic Football Festival Children had a fantastic time taking part in our exciting football festival this week. The event was full of energy, teamwork and great sportsmanship from start to finish.

• Friday 8 May 2026 Year 3 Week 3: Field of Dreams & Desert Scenes This week in art, we became sculptors inspired by Antony Gormley and his famous Field for the British Isles. Using clay, we carefully shaped and moulded our own “Field for the Masses” sculptures, creating a powerful collection of tiny figures full of personality and expression.
• Friday 1 May 2026 Week 2: Breaking News: Children Become Journalists! In today's classroom news, pupils stepped into the world of journalism as they explored the key features of newspapers in preparation for writing their own reports about The Iron Man.
• Wednesday 29 April 2026 Year 3 Sunflower Day 2026 Today, Year 3 embraced the beauty of nature as we celebrated Sunflower Day! Using a wonderful collection of garden materials, the children worked creatively to design and build their own unique sunflowers. From petals made of leaves and bark to centres crafted from seeds and soil, every piece was a reflection of their imagination and teamwork.
• Friday 24 April 2026 Week 1: Growing Knowledge: Hands-On Plant Science The classroom was filled with curiosity as children examined roots, stems, leaves, and flowers up close. They gently separated each part, observing textures, structures, and patterns. The activity helped bring science to life, transforming abstract ideas into real, tangible learning.
• Thursday 2 April 2026 Year 3 Week 6: Step Back in Time for Stone Age Day Year 3 had an unforgettable day travelling back thousands of years to the Stone Age! The children fully immersed themselves in history through a range of exciting, hands-on activities that brought prehistoric life to life.
• Friday 27 March 2026 Year 3 Week 5: The Sill 'Rocks'! Our pupils enjoyed an exciting and enriching trip to The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre, located in the heart of Northumberland's stunning countryside.
• Friday 20 March 2026 Week 4: Stepping into the Story: Jesus’s Baptism Brought to Life This week in RE, our pupils have been learning about the baptism of Jesus and why it is such an important event for Christians. The children explored the story from the Bible, discussing its meaning and thinking carefully about the symbols involved, such as water, the dove, and God's voice.
• Friday 13 March 2026 Year 3 Week 3: From Magma to Metamorphic: Discovering the Rock Cycle This week in Science, the children have been learning all about the rock cycle. We explored how different types of rocks are formed and discovered the processes that change rocks over time, including heating, cooling, pressure and erosion.

• Friday 12 December 2025 Year 3 Week 6: Patterns of the Amazon: Our Collaborative Creation This week, pupils across the year group have been working together on a stunning collaborative art piece, inspired by the vibrant patterns and powerful messages of Nixiwaka Yawanawá, the Indigenous Amazonian artist and activist. Using bold colours, natural shapes, and repeating tribal patterns, the children combined their individual sections to create one large artwork celebrating the beauty and spirit of the Amazon. The final piece is a breath taking display of teamwork, creativity, and respect for Indigenous culture.
• Friday 5 December 2025 Year 3 Week 5: Santa Dash Today our school hosted the annual Santa Dash, and it was nothing short of amazing! The Sele was transformed into a winter wonderland as children, staff, and even a few very enthusiastic parents took part in the big festive run.
• Friday 28 November 2025 Year 3 Week 4: Rhythm of the Ramanyana Our school was buzzing with energy this week as pupils took part in an exciting Ramayana dance workshop led by the talented team from West End in Schools.
• Friday 21 November 2025 Year 3 Week 3: Let’s Talk Rainforests! This week, our budding geographers took their learning to new heights—quite literally—as they used oracy skills and creative materials to build the layers of the rainforest!
• Friday 14 November 2025 Week 2: Striking a Pose with Hansel and Gretel! This week, our pupils stepped into the world of Michael Morpurgo's Hansel and Gretel through an exciting drama activity: freeze frames. Working in small groups, children recreated key moments from the story, thinking carefully about body language, facial expression, and the emotions of each character.

We discovered that a healthy lunch isn't just about how many calories it has — it's about getting the right balance of foods.
• Thursday 23 October 2025 Year 3 Week 8: Wood You Believe It? EGGER Visits Year 3! To finish our half term in style, Year 3 were visited by representatives from EGGER, our local manufacturing company in Hexham. The visitors explained how EGGER turns wood into a range of useful products, such as chipboard and furniture panels, which are used in homes, schools, and workplaces all over the UK.
• Friday 17 October 2025 Year 3 Week 7: Magic at Lilidorei Year 3 enjoyed a truly magical day out at Lilidorei, where imagination came to life among the twisting towers, secret tunnels, and enchanting stories of the mythical clans who live there.

• Monday 17 February 2025 Year 3 STEM Dress up! Our Year 3 students have embraced the excitement of our STEM fortnight with a fantastic Star Wars theme! The children showcased their creativity by dressing up as their favourite Star Wars characters, adding a fun flair to our activities.
• Monday 10 February 2025 MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU And we’re off! Year 3 STEM kicked off with an exciting message from Yoda, explaining our mission to help the Rebel Alliance defeat the Dark Side. Our challenge? Designing and building a landing pad for the drones used in battle!
• Tuesday 4 February 2025 Y3 Magnets! In their science lesson, children explored magnetism by designing and creating magnetic racing games. Working in pairs or small groups, they built a racetrack from cardboard and attached a paperclip to a small race car. Using a bar magnet under the track, they discovered how magnetic forces move objects without direct contact.
• Friday 17 January 2025 Bees! This week we had a visit from Mr Garlick who came to talk about bees! He told us lots of interesting facts about bees, including that there could be 70’000 in one hive! We’ve been looking at bees as the main pollinator in Geography and that a lot of food around the world is dependent on them.
• Thursday 9 January 2025 Voiceovers This week Children in Year 3 have been working on their voiceover projects in Computing. This activity is all about developing their creativity, confidence, and communication skills.
• Tuesday 17 December 2024 Y3 Masks Year 3 have been exploring the Amazon Rainforest in Geography. As part of their DT project, they created incredible animal masks inspired by creatures found in rainforests around the world. Each mask started with a simple paper plate, cut, shaped and secured using masking tape. The children then added colour and intricate details using tissue paper and glue. Take a look at the fantastic tigers and sloths they've made!
• Thursday 12 December 2024 Y3 Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland's Carol Service Year 3 children were invited to sing at a special service held for the whole of Northumberland to celebrate the county's community spirit. We were one of three musical interludes. We sang carols with a brass band and listened to some fantastic singers from Vox Populi.
• Tuesday 3 December 2024 Year 3 - Nutrition This week children have been looking at Nutrition in Science. We have investigated the Nutrition Facts labels of some foods and compared them with each other. Children identified the nutrients that matched with foods and how the nutrients help our body. We talked about how our body needs a range of food to remain healthy - if all we ate was carrots, we wouldn't be healthy!
• Tuesday 19 November 2024 Year 3 Orienteering In Year 3, the children have been developing their orienteering skills during outdoor learning sessions on the Sele Playing Field. Orienteering combines map reading and physical activity, helping children build confidence in their navigational abilities while staying active.
• Friday 8 November 2024 Year 3 PE This week in PE, Year 3 had a blast with some dancing and running! They loved getting into the groove with some fun dance moves, and they also practiced their running skills, working on speed and stamina. It was great to see them so full of energy and having fun together
