Modern Foreign Languages

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.

SELEfirst School believes that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for the pupils and we are therefore keen to promote the introduction of a Modern Foreign Language to all our pupils.

The teaching pupils receive at SELEfirst should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes.

Here at SELEfirst we feel it is important to implement the teaching and learning of a foreign language as early as possible in a child's learning journey. At SELEfirst, our MFL curriculum is offered as early as Reception ensuring progressive coverage of the skills required by the National Curriculum.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. The focus of study in modern languages will be on practical communication.
