National Writing Day 2024

National Writing Day is an annual celebration of the power of writing creatively, inspiring people of all ages and abilities to try writing for fun and self-expression.

This occasion provides a great opportunity to celebrate the reasons why young people write - including creativity, mental well-being, and social action or connection - and to encourage everyone to find their writing motivation and voice.

The National Literacy Trust's recent research in to Children and young people's writing in 2024 found that:

Children and young people’s enjoyment of writing, and frequency of writing in their free time, is at an unprecedented low. Increasing evidence of a long-term downward trend calls for urgent action to reconnect children and young people with writing that promotes connection with creativity, self-expression and mental wellbeing.

At Sele First School, staff are committed to raising the profile of writing for pleasure and teaching children ways in which they can use writing games and tasks as a tool to: express their ideas and imagination; express their thoughts and feelings; relax and make them feel happy.

On Wednesday, children spent a full day off timetable engaging in a wide variety of games and tasks all centred around writing.

  • Human Hungry Hippos (Spelling) HUGE fun!
  • The Big Spelling Hunt on the school yard
  • Classroom Codebreakers
  • Roll up consequences stories
  • Positive notes, cards and letters to deliver to teachers and peers in school
  • Themed writing rooms e.g. Nature, Magic and Sports
  • Book makers
  • Peer Massage - using letter formation or spellings
  • WANTED posters for teachers!
  • AND MANY MORE

Children wrote where they were most comfortable, took shoes off and found cosy spots in the classroom. They chose different pens and pencils to write with and took great pride in the work they produced. We hope that the day has ignited or reminded children about the fun they can have with writing.
