Geography

Our Geography curriculum allows children to develop knowledge of place and environments, including the built and natural environments, both local to them and throughout the world. We also provide children with opportunities to understand environmental issues and sustainable development.  As children study Geography at Sele First School they learn about different cultures and societies, this helps them to realise how nations rely on each other in an increasingly globalised world. Our geography curriculum allows children to think about their place in the world, their values and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment.

The governors and staff recognise that in a world where economies are increasingly interdependent and global communication is a daily reality, global issues should form a key part of the curriculum at Sele First School.  We also believe it is especially necessary for children in a culturally homogeneous school community such as Hexham, to see themselves as part of a diverse regional, national and global community and to consider issues from the perspective of others.  We plan to stimulate children’s interest in their surroundings and in the variety of human and physical conditions on the Earth’s surface. We foster children’s sense of wonder at the beauty of the world around them and help children to develop an informed concern about the quality of the environment and the future of the human habitat.

We raise awareness and celebrate the cultural diversity throughout the world.  We foster tolerance and understanding. We plan opportunities that allow children to focus their minds on ‘big issues’ such as poverty, racism, religion and human rights.  We want our children to be excited by the prospect of meeting people from other parts of the world, learning about other cultures.  To this end we have several partnerships with schools in other parts of the world where children correspond and colleagues form those schools visit Sele First School.
